VAD, Segmentation, Timestamps, and Speakers
Objective
Split continuous audio safely into recognizable segments, and distinguish voice activity detection, speaker diarization, and identity verification.
Three different problems
- VAD (Voice Activity Detection): whether a time range contains human voice.
- Speaker diarization: answers “who spoke when,” usually with anonymous labels such as speaker_0 and speaker_1. It differs from speaker separation, which separates overlapping sources into independent tracks.
- Speaker identification/verification: associates a voice with a real identity and has higher risk and authorization requirements.
A diarization label is not an identity. The appearance of speaker_0 in several segments does not justify claiming to know the person’s name.
Segmentation-parameter tradeoffs
VAD usually needs start/end thresholds, minimum speech, minimum silence, and boundary padding. A threshold that is too sensitive labels keyboard sounds as speech; one that is too conservative misses quiet words and sentence openings. Padding reduces truncation but increases overlap, which must be deduplicated in merging.
Timestamps can be segment-, word-, or character-level. A model timestamp can be an estimate rather than legally or subtitle-grade alignment. Evaluation can define a tolerance window and observe boundary deviations separately.
Overlapping speech and cross-segment context
When two people speak together, single-channel ASR can mix text, and diarization may return only the dominant speaker. Mark overlap=true or uncertain_speaker=true in the contract instead of forcing an assignment.
Limited context prompts can improve proper nouns across segments, but an unconfirmed error in one segment must not propagate indefinitely. Retain context_source and whether it influenced decoding.
Exercises and self-check
- Design separate segmentation strategies for a speech with many short pauses and a meeting with multiple interruptions.
- Does VAD finding a human voice guarantee language can be recognized? No; it can be singing, far-field audio, or an unknown language.
- Does speaker-label swapping prove the entire diarization is wrong? Not necessarily; evaluation usually finds the best mapping between anonymous labels.
